Apply for Retirement

  • Step 1 - Create a personalized retirement estimate at any time

    Sign into your account to create your personalized retirement estimate*. Estimate includes your:

    * Retirement estimate is not available to retirees. It's only available to members with ERS retirement accounts.

    Please note that the online estimator doesn’t include any information from a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) or service from a proportionate retirement system. You’ll need to contact ERS to estimate your retirement payment and date. Also, contact ERS if you have withdrawn service and want to know when you can retire and how much you’ve receive if you back the service.

    Step 2 - Apply for retirement no earlier than 90 days

    You should speak with a retirement counselor to prepare your retirement packet. You'll need to know:

    • Retirement payment options,
    • Partial lump sum options (if applicable),
    • Beneficiary information (including name, date of birth, relationship and Social Security number),
    • Direct deposit information (routing and account number), and
    • your tax withholding status.

    Retirement Counselors are available by phone or by scheduling an appointment.

    After making your selections, ERS will send a retirement packet to you.

    Step 3 - Return your retirement documents before your retirement date

    To complete the retirement process:

    • Review all the documents in your packet,
    • Sign the Retirement Acceptance form in front of a notary public,
    • Have your spouse sign the Retirement Acceptance in front of a notary public if you’ve chosen someone other than him or her as beneficiary for a survivor payment option,
    • Make a copy of your proof of age document,
    • Make a copy of your beneficiary’s proof of age document (if applicable),
    • Complete the TRS Service Credit Transfer Request form (if applicable),
    • Complete the beneficiary designation form for the $5,000 Retiree Lump Sum Death Benefit and
    • Mail the documents to ERS.

    Valid Proof of Age Documents: Copy of a Birth Certificate, Passport, Baptismal record, Bible record, or school record. If your name has changed or does not match the document, you must also send a copy of your valid state driver's license.
