  • Short-term Disability insurance

    This optional benefit provides you with a portion of your monthly insurance salary if illness or injury keeps you from working.To be eligible for benefits, a physician must certify you as totally disabled. Benefits are paid for a period of up to five months.

     Dearborn National is the third party administrator for disability insurance. This coverage is not available to family members or retirees.

  • Who is eligible for disability insurance?

    Active employees are eligible for disability insurance. Family members and retirees are not eligible.

    Employees on leave of absence are eligible to continue coverage by paying premiums directly to ERS.

  • How to Enroll

    Sign into your account and select Post Hire Change to make changes within 31 days of your hire or rehire. During Annual Enrollment, log in to your account and select Benefits Enrollment to make changes. Otherwise, you may sign up within 31 days of a qualifying life event (QLE), if the election of coverage is consistent with the event or during Annual Enrollment. Life EOI approval is required to enroll.

  • Is evidence of insurability required?

    Proof of good health, called evidence of insurability (EOI), is not required to enroll in disability insurance during your first 31 days of hire, rehire, or transfer.

    After the first 31 days, EOI is required to enroll.

  • Coverage

    Monthly Benefit 

    • Maximum: lesser of 66% of your monthly salary (up to $10,000) or $6,600.
    • Minimum: not less than 10% of your income (occurs if you are receiving worker’s compensation, a disability retirement benefit, social security benefits, or other disability benefits)

    Coverage Period 
    Benefits are paid to you for up to 5 months.

    Eligibility for benefit 

    • Certified as totally disabled by an approved practitioner
    • Completed the waiting period
    • Approved for disability payments by Fort Dearborn Life.

    Waiting period
    Before the plan begins to pay you benefits, you must use your sick leave balance, extended sick leave, and sick leave pool, or finish a 30-day waiting period, whichever option is a longer period of time. Sick leave use and waiting period run concurrently.

    This benefit includes a preexisting conditions clause.
